STEEL Research Center

Introduction

It was in 2006 that IUT’s Deputy for Research & Technology set up an Expert Committee on Iron & Steel Industry with a mission to organize and promote the already on-going university-industry cooperation. Members appointed to the Committee were selected from among academia and industrialists with outstanding experience and background in the field. Along its mandate, the Committee undertook an exhaustive review of the experiences and projects over the past several years to develop a proposal for the establishment of the Steel Research Center as a new institution with appropriate policies for the qualitative and quantitative enhancement of university-industry joint activities in steel industry.

Goals

Steel Research Center is mandated to bridge the gaps in research and technological development in the steel industry, to improve steel production quality and efficiency of the national plants, create and strengthen collaboration between the steel industry and university researchers, and finally, to set benchmarks for the evaluation of the pertinent activities. The center committed itself to undertaking and encouraging applied research for the achievement of the above objectives.

Why establish Steel Research Center?

The 4th National Development Plan of the country demands steel production in Iran to reach 29 million tons per year by the end of the plan period. Achieving this objective calls for the introduction and application of state-of-the-art technology for high-efficiency steel production. In order to meet this demand, the development of the relevant technologies would depend on planning for both applied and developmental research by both academia and industrial R&D units that can be transferred and conveniently accommodated to production lines for commercial production of high quality products. Evidently, capacity building by sound educational programs and adoption and diffusion of modern technologies is the cornerstone for any advancement in the field. The bottom-up direction of educationally-based capacity building to the state-of-the-art research, commercialization of research findings, and finally, to the efficient production of steel has its own requisites that need to be located. There would be no better site than IUT in Isfahan, the national industrial zone.

Industrial Links

Isfahan, an industrial zone in Iran, is a unique cradle of not only the steel industry but also the academic endeavors. The Province of Isfahan houses the major steel plants and related industries and is nationally recognized as the Center of Steel Production. Its Isfahan Steel Co., Mobarakeh Steel Co., and Isfahan Alloy Steel Co. have a great share in the national production of steel.

IUT has promoted close-knit relations with industry, especially with the steel industry over the last decade. Over 200 research projects have been successfully completed on demand by the steel industry. The results from these projects have no doubt played a great role in the self-sufficiency of the steel industry in terms of technology transfer relieving the country from reliance on turn-key plant imports. Furthermore, new technologies have emerged for commercialization of these projects.
