Information & Communication Technology Research Center

 

Information and Communication Technology Research Center was founded in 1986 under the name of Electrical & Computer Engineering Research Center.  Since then, the center has been conducting intense applied research in the areas of Communications, Computers and Electronics. The center has dedicated its endeavors to the creation of an academically competent environment where the academic research by the faculty members, research associates and graduate students meets the demands of industry at national level.

The center has successfully completed many projects mostly under grants and contracts with industry.   Many of researchers and projects have received international, national and university awards for their excellence in the fulfillment of national demands. Moreover, the center has defined and supported numerous masters and PhD theses of Isfahan University of Technology (IUT).

 

Organization

The center embodies three research groups, namely:

ü    Communications

ü    Informatics

ü    Power

 

1. Communications

 This group is capable of design and implementation of analog communication circuits and systems, from Base Band to various RF frequencies. These systems include low noise amplifiers, oscillators and signal generators, mixers and detectors, RF filters, amplifiers and frequency synthesizers. This group is comprised of Microwave &Antenna, Communication Circuits and Analog Electronics.

 

2. Informatics

 This group is in charge of design and development of computer software and hardware for various communication and control systems. Data acquisition, signal and data processing, monitoring and remote testing and maintenance, industrial automation and robotics are amongst the group's activities. This group is comprised of Hardware, Software and Signal Processing. 

 

3. Power

 Design and fabrication of high voltage power supplies, switching power supplies, inductive furnaces, active power filters, modulators and Intelligent A.C. Motor Drives can be stated as some of the capabilities of this group. This group is comprised of Power Electronics, RF and Pulsed Power.

 

Major projects are divided into subprojects based on their scientific and technical requirements, to be carried out in different research groups.  Beside contract-based research project, the center conducts state of the art research as a basis for defining new projects. This is carried out in three research cores in the fields of ICT, Electronics and Automation.

 

Goals

The activities conducted at the center have clustered around the following goals:

ü  Establishing an effective research interface between the university and industry

ü  Supervision of modernization programs in various industries

ü  Obtaining and maintaining state-of-the-art research facilities

ü  Design and implementation of electronic systems in accordance with industry demands

ü  Defining, supervising and supporting graduate and undergraduate theses towards accomplishing state of the art large scale projects

ü  Presenting short courses, workshops and training courses.

Industrial Automation

Major aspirations of industrial automation research section are development of computer software and hardware as well as any required interface for various industrial automation applications, robotics and enhancement of aged and valuable laboratory and industrial equipments based on recent technologies.

 

Current activities are concentrated on the:

ü  Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Systems

ü  Factory Automation (FA)

ü  Distributed Control Systems (DCS)

ü  Smart sensors

ü  Industrial communication networks

ü  Robotics & Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV)

ü  CAE, CAD, CAM, CAT software and hardware design & implementation

ü  Design and implementation of modern user interface and control sections for high precision, test and measurement laboratory equipments

 

Applied Software Development

Analysis, design and implementation of large platform-free software for communication, control, automation and information systems.

Hardware Development

Design and implementation of tailor-made hardware modules and add-ons to accommodate project requirements by using state of the art tools and technologies for fast development.

Current activities focus on:

 

ü  High rate data acquisition cards

ü  VLSI based hardware processor units for very fast real time applications

ü  Digital signal processing cards based on various DSP chips

ü  Intelligent sensors and actuators

ü  Data communication networks for harsh and noisy environments

ü  Distributed long distance control and monitoring networks

ü  Flexible programmable cores using FPGA technology

 

 

Communication & Electronic Systems Development

Design and implementation of analog communication circuits and systems from base band to various RF frequencies.

 

Current activities are focused on:

 

ü  Low noise receiver front ends

ü  High sensitivity receivers

ü  Medium & high power solid state RF transmitters

ü  Wireless communication

ü  Signal generators & wide range frequency synthesizers

ü  High frequency modules (filters, amplifiers, mixers, detectors)

 

Power electronics circuits & system

Design and fabrication of high voltage power supplies, switching power supplies, inductive furnaces, pulsed modulators and RF power amplifiers can be stated as some of the activities of this group.

 

Current activities are centered on:

 

ü  High Voltage Switching Power Supplies (HVSPS)

ü  Soft starters, inverters, AC & DC motor drives

ü  Pulse power applications

ü  Design and development of HVDCs

ü  RF power amplifiers

 

Documentation Department

Document preparation for different phases of all projects carried out in different groups and sections is accomplished at this department. This department is also in charge of supplying information and documents required by the center projects. Through the documentation process, all project reports are prepared, edited and catalogued. Upon the completion of every project, the related documents are compiled and prepared for delivery to the users. Implementation manuals, users guides, reference manuals and product manuals are some of the documents being prepared by this department. Furthermore, all information and documents required by research sections and groups are ordered, acquired, catalogued and circulated through the center.

Currently, over 6000 pieces of documents including books, M.Sc. & PhD theses, reports, internet resources, compact disks, floppy disks, video films, PCBs and educational project reports are provided for users. These materials could be searched after being prepared and organized. Presentation of short term courses and seminars as well as holding exhibitions can be mentioned as other activities carried out at this department.
